Hallo erst einmal. Kannst Du dich bitte kurz vorstellen?
Hi, I’m Sophie Green from the band Her Name is Calla. I play violin and sing along with Tom on the tracks.
Kannst Du mir etwas darüber erzählen, wie und wann “Her Name Is Calla” gegründet wurde?
Her Name is Calla was formed a few years ago in Leicester, UK, by Tom and Mike, and then grew and expanded as myself, Adam and Thom joined. The sound has grown larger and more expansive, as we bring more instruments and range of emotion to the typical post rock sound.
Die obligatorische Frage. Dich fragt eine ältere Dame, was ihr für Musik macht. Wie wäre Eure Antwort?
Haha! I get asked this a lot at work. I just say rock music. With violin, trumpet and trombone, to clarify that we’re not some garage rock band.
Wie entstehen Eure Songs? Zunächst eine Stimmung, ein Bild im Kopf oder eine Geschichte?
From what I can see, Tom sketches ideas out for nice phrases in his notebook, and he might have an idea for a structure or particular melody. Sometimes the songs are already pretty developed in Tom’s mind and heart, othertimes we’ll all contribute something that vastly changes the sound of the song. In the end, it’s a massive team effort – none of the songs would sound the same without each one of us. Over the album and the Heritage EP, there are unifying themes and concepts, which arise within each of the songs – but sometimes these feelings are borne out of our own hearts and experiences rather than deliberately writing them down.
Euer Album aber auch die EP, das sind epische lange Songs. Oft mit melancholischer und sehr elegischer Grundstimmung. Songs, die zumindest mich tief berühren.Ich hoffe, ihr habt auch genug Gründe zum Lachen?
We’re nothing like our songs at all! Don’t worry! We get drunk together and watch awesome comedies on DVD, like Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, or waste lots of money on stupid pub quiz games. We buy 90s classic CDs for our tour van and learn all of the lyrics, and read only crude men magazines. Somehow, we end up in crazy situations a lot. We went camping in Germany on the last tour, and it was an incredible amount of fun. We swam in a lake, got lost in the local town (at midnight), ate pizza on the grass and spent our drummer’s last five euros on an inflatable ball. Which we kicked once and lost.
Was dürfen wir von eurem neuen Album “The Quiet Lamb” erwarten?
It’s very long, but (hopefully) listeners will find the experience a rare and immersive treat. It has not-so-classic post rock builds – the weight of emotion draws the song to sadder, melancholic levels, whilst the exultation of us all playing and bashing drums and singing will seem euphoric at times, too.
Lieblingsbands oder Musiker?
We love a mix of things: right now, it’s probably Cat Power, Volcano, Arcade Fire, Tchaikovsky, Shearwater, my boyfriend’s band worriedaboutsatan and our fellow Denovali artists.
Welches Album hast du dir zuletzt gekauft?
I bought Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs and Joanna Newsom’s beautiful Have One on Me.
Und der größte Fehlkauf?
Jimmy Nail’s The Nail File. Classic.
Der Musikmarkt ist im Umbruch. Die CD-Verkäufe brechen ein. Liveauftritte scheinen zu boomen. Wie geht es weiter? Siehst Du einen Ausweg?
Fans start reconnecting with music – a distancing from the cold, click-and-download anything you can on the popular music blogs and a rediscovery of the heart of the artists – what it meant for the artist to decide to create that music, why they thought about the particular packaging, why the songs have come to exist in the first place. When I buy music, I like feeling like I am contributing to the future creation of this artist’s music, and that I’m saying thank you for making the songs in the first place.
Euer Plattenlabel vertreibt limitiere Editionen, aufwendige Vinyls und CD`s in Holzboxen.Ist dies ein möglicher Weg, um die Abwertung von Musik zu stoppen?
I think it helps the listener to feel like they have a special version of the music and aids the aesthetic of the records.
Was für Erfahrungen hast Du als Musiker mit Facebook, Twitter, Myspace und Musik Blogs gemacht?
I love internet networking right now! We use Facebook and Twitter the most – it’s great to talk instantly to fans and people in the music industry, and get feedback straightaway. I love being able to talk to people in other countries, when I wouldn’t normally realise our music was being listened there! We’re starting to use a tumblr too, to post our ideas and inspiration, and it acts as a sort of diary for us, too (http://hernameiscalla.tumblr.com)
Was war Dein bisher größte Erfolg mit der Band?
Probably the album will be our biggest success, I hope! Up until now, we had some awesome, really busy and exciting gigs in Germany last summer, which we’ll always remember!
Zum Schluss die dümmste Frage. Als Deutsche esse ich natürlich gerne Eisbein (nich wirklich) mit Sauerkraut und dazu reichlich Bier (manchmal). Dein Lieblingsessen?
Eww! What’s pork knuckle?! Haha! Our favourite food……….. probably junk food. Like pizza or a good curry – and some cold beer!
